Why a kōwhai?

It starts with a leaf on the water.

The day

If you've got ADHD, a day can feel like being a leaf on a river.

You can see the bank. You just can't get there.

The years

Pull back and you see the river.

Water running down a mountain cuts its own path. Years of it cut deep. The deeper the cut, the harder it is to change direction.

A bad week

Canterbury's rivers braid.

Lots of shallow channels, all shifting, none of them the main one. That's a bad week, seen from above.

Trying harder

So people tell you to try harder. Fight the current.

You do. It's real effort. The river doesn't notice.

The bank

You don't move a river by paddling. You move the bank.

A stone here, a stone there. Slowly the water finds a new way. Nobody has to fight it.

The kōwhai

That's why our tree is a kōwhai.

It grows on riverbanks, leaning out over the water. The leaf you started with fell from one.
